Real Madrid are living through turbulent days. The club is navigating a difficult period, marked less than a week ago by the dismissal of Xabi Alonso. As always when there is instability on the bench at the Santiago Bernabéu, one familiar name inevitably resurfaces among fans and in the media: José Mourinho.
Many Madridistas still look back fondly on the Portuguese coach’s spell at the club and continue to regret that his era did not culminate in a Champions League title. Last night, the current Benfica manager was asked directly about the possibility of returning to Real Madrid, but he wasted no time in shutting the door.
“Don’t count on me for soap operas,” Mourinho replied. “There are good soap operas, but they’re very long; you miss one or two episodes and then you lose track. Don’t count on me, because I don’t watch soap operas.”
Despite his firm response, the relationship between Florentino Pérez and Mourinho remains excellent. According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, the Real Madrid president recently sent his best wishes to his former coach during the club’s Christmas dinner. Coincidentally, both are expected to cross paths again in the Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Benfica.
Unless something dramatic happens, Álvaro Arbeloa is set to remain on the Real Madrid bench until the end of the season. What he achieves—or fails to achieve—between now and then will ultimately determine the direction of the club’s managerial future next year.
