They were just two words, yet they defined an entire era during the peak of tension between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. José Mourinho and Pep Guardiola delivered some of the most unforgettable press conferences in football history during those Clásicos that decided a place in the 2011 Champions League final. Fifteen years later, the Portuguese coach’s famous question still echoes: Why?

At the time, Mourinho openly suggested that Barcelona benefited from refereeing decisions in European competition. “Why? Why? Obrevo, Stara, Bussaca, Frisk, De Bleeckere, Stark. Why does the same thing happen in every semi-final? They’re a fantastic team… but why every year? I don’t know if it’s the UNICEF image, Villar’s good relationship with UEFA, or because they’re very nice. Congratulations on everything they’ve achieved. The others don’t stand a chance.” A press conference that became part of football folklore.

On the eve of the Benfica vs Real Madrid match, Mourinho once again faced Spanish journalists, and the question was unavoidable. Months have passed since the revelations surrounding what could become one of the biggest alleged corruption scandals in Spanish football history: the Negreira Case.

This time, however, Mourinho appeared noticeably calmer when asked about his famous “Why.” His response, though brief, was striking: “I’m not interested, honestly. I live my career day by day. What happened, happened.”
