José Mourinho has returned to Real Madrid with the objective of restoring order and competitiveness after two challenging seasons. While much of the attention has focused on his leadership style, the Portuguese coach is also preparing a detailed tactical approach for his new project.
According to Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, Mourinho is expected to begin with a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Jude Bellingham playing a key role as the attacking midfielder. However, one of the most notable features of his system will be the use of asymmetrical full-backs.
Under this setup, each full-back will have a different role. On the right flank, Denzel Dumfries and Trent Alexander-Arnold are expected to operate in highly advanced positions due to their attacking qualities. When Real Madrid have possession, either player could effectively function as a winger.
On the opposite side, Marc Cucurella is expected to take on a more conservative role. Rather than pushing forward, the left-back would move closer to the center-backs to provide defensive balance and additional cover.
As a result, Real Madrid's shape in possession could resemble either a 3-6-1 or a 3-4-3. The back line would consist of the two center-backs alongside Cucurella, while the midfield structure would feature the two holding midfielders, Bellingham in an advanced central role, and an inverted right winger such as Bernardo Silva or Arda Güler.
This movement would create space for Dumfries to attack down the right flank, while Vinicius Junior would provide width on the left. Kylian Mbappé would lead the attack as the central striker.
The system is designed to create numerical superiority in midfield while maintaining width through the wingers and ensuring defensive stability with a back three during possession phases. According to the report, Mourinho believes this structure can maximize the strengths of several key players within the squad.
