José Mourinho’s planned return to Real Madrid has reportedly been placed on hold due to the club’s presidential elections.

According to the report, Florentino Pérez and the Portuguese coach already have a full agreement in place for a two-year contract, with the option of a third season if Real Madrid win La Liga. However, the deal is not expected to be finalized until Pérez is officially re-elected president.

If that scenario does not happen, Mourinho reportedly has no intention of remaining at Benfica and could instead accept one of the other offers currently on the table.

Despite the delay, Mourinho has already outlined the areas of the squad he believes need reinforcement ahead of next season. The coach is said to want one or two new center-backs, one or two full-backs, and two midfielders, including a defensive midfielder and a more creative profile.

The Portuguese manager has reportedly prepared a detailed report after analyzing Real Madrid’s recent league performances and evaluating the current squad.

A major priority in his project would be strengthening the defense with at least one reliable right-back and potentially another left-back later in the process. In midfield, Mourinho is said to consider the addition of a defensive midfielder essential to compete with and cover for Aurélien Tchouaméni.

He also reportedly wants a creative midfielder similar in profile to Fredrik Aursnes, whom he previously coached at Benfica. That role is viewed internally as one of the biggest gaps in the current squad.

The report adds that Mourinho has not requested specific names, focusing instead on the positions he believes need strengthening.

Real Madrid are aware changes may be necessary, but the club also understands that new arrivals would likely require departures first. The exits of David Alaba and Dani Carvajal are already confirmed due to their expiring contracts, while the futures of Dani Ceballos and Eduardo Camavinga remain uncertain. Antonio Rüdiger’s renewal also has yet to be officially announced.

If Fran García leaves the club, Mourinho would reportedly also request the signing of another left-back.

For now, the ongoing electoral process has temporarily frozen several important sporting decisions linked to the project.
