José Mourinho is expected to deploy a 4-2-3-1 system upon his return to the Real Madrid bench, a formation he has used extensively throughout his coaching career and during his first spell at the club.

However, the potential arrival of Alessandro Bastoni could open the door to tactical adjustments. With the Italian center-back possibly joining an already strong defensive unit, a back three system with wing-backs cannot be ruled out.

If Bastoni arrives, Real Madrid would have several high-level options in central defense, including Eder Militão, Dean Huijsen, Ibrahima Konaté, and Antonio Rüdiger. This depth could make it difficult to rely on just two center-backs, increasing the likelihood of a tactical shift.

One possible alternative would be a system with three central defenders and two wing-backs, similar to setups Mourinho has used at Roma in the past. In this scenario, Real Madrid could line up in a 3-5-2 formation with Courtois in goal; Militão, Huijsen, Rüdiger, Konaté, and Bastoni competing for the three central defensive roles; Dumfries and Cucurella operating as wing-backs; Valverde and Tchouaméni in midfield; Bellingham in an advanced playmaking role; and Vinícius alongside Mbappé in attack.

Such a structure would strengthen defensive stability while also maximizing the attacking potential of the wide players. Although a back five is unusual at Real Madrid, Mourinho’s arrival signals a willingness to reshape the team’s structure if necessary, particularly if it allows key signings like Bastoni to have a decisive role in the starting XI.
