Vinícius Jr. is facing an unexpected scenario at Real Madrid. The Brazilian forward was widely expected to be an automatic starter alongside Kylian Mbappé, but that hasn’t been the case under Xabi Alonso. Los Blancos have won all five of their matches across LaLiga and the Champions League, yet the conversation around Vinícius’ role remains lively.

So far, Vinícius has started three of those five games, while Rodrygo has started two. The number 11, who at one point seemed to be losing his place, has regained his confidence and is back on the left wing—his favored position. Even so, he has yet to register a goal or an assist this season.

The Brazilian has also been in the spotlight due to his contract renewal. Former Madrid star Pedja Mijatovic weighed in on Cadena SER, saying: “Xabi wants to keep all the players active, giving minutes in almost every game in both LaLiga and the Champions League. Against Olympique de Marseille, it was Vinícius’ turn.”

Mijatovic also added a pointed remark: “If you train poorly, without enthusiasm because you’re not starting, you won’t play. I wouldn’t worry too much—it depends on him. If he pushes harder, he’ll play; if not, someone else will.”
