Pedja Mijatovic, who played for Real Madrid from 1996 to 1999 and later served as the club’s director of football between 2006 and 2009, spoke on the program “El Larguero” about his view on Vinicius Junior’s contract renewal.

The former Montenegrin striker, now 56, addressed a report from The Athletic claiming that Vinicius may have met with Florentino Pérez and suggested he would not renew his contract if his situation with Xabi Alonso, with whom he reportedly does not share a strong relationship, did not improve.

Mijatovic made his stance clear, stating that no player, regardless of their status, can demand a coaching change in a team sport like football. He highlighted that Vinicius’ current contract runs until 2027.

He insisted that “situations like this cannot be tolerated” and added that he would understand such demands only if Vinicius were scoring three goals every match, which is not the case. For Mijatovic, Real Madrid must set firm limits: “If you’re not happy, that’s fine, nobody is forcing you to stay.”

He also urged patience with Xabi Alonso. Mijatovic explained that it is normal for difficulties to arise in a coach’s first season and that Xabi needs time. He noted that Real Madrid have had mixed performances in the Champions League but are still competing well.

Finally, he stated that he does not see signs of Xabi Alonso losing control of the locker room, a situation he claims did occur with Ancelotti last season.
