Kylian Mbappé made a decisive move last week by traveling to France to consult specialists regarding the sprained left knee that has troubled him since December. The striker missed the crucial Champions League clash against Benfica and, amid a lack of progress, chose to seek a second medical opinion in his home country — with full authorization from Real Madrid.
Mbappé is reportedly dissatisfied with the club’s medical management of his injury. After nearly three months without a definitive solution, the recurring discomfort has affected both his performances and his continuity in the starting XI. Frequent rotations and inconsistent fitness levels have only heightened frustration within the player’s camp.
The issue dates back to December 7, when Mbappé left the match against Celta Vigo with discomfort in his medial collateral ligament (MCL). However, there are now concerns that the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) could also be involved — one of the reasons behind his decision to seek external evaluation.
Both the player and the coaching staff agreed before the Benfica match that stronger action was necessary to avoid prolonging the issue. The priority is clear: fully resolve the knee problem at its root and have Mbappé at 100% for the decisive stretch of the season.
Real Madrid’s immediate focus is the upcoming Champions League knockout round, with the first leg on March 11 and the return leg on March 17. The timeline is extremely tight. Internally, there is cautious optimism that Mbappé could make the second leg, though his availability for the first remains highly uncertain.
The club’s objective is simple: ensure their star forward is fully fit when it matters most — even if that means short-term sacrifices now.
