Kylian Mbappé did not hide after Real Madrid’s defeat in Lisbon. The French forward was openly critical of the team’s performance and pointed to a recurring issue that he believes is hurting the season: a lack of consistency.
“I don’t have a clear explanation. We lack continuity in our play, and that’s something we have to fix,” Mbappé admitted. “You can’t be good one day and bad the next. That’s not how a championship-winning team behaves. It hurts because we wanted February to be a month of growth, but the position we’re in is deserved.”
Despite scoring twice at the Estádio da Luz and reaching 36 goals this season, Mbappé was brutally honest about the collective display. “We played very badly. The fourth goal, when we were already losing 3-2, didn’t change anything. It’s a bit embarrassing, but it doesn’t change the reality.”
The forward insisted that the problem goes beyond a single factor. “Last week we played well, now we didn’t. We need consistency. We’re missing a bit of everything. It’s not just attitude or just football, it’s a general issue. In the Champions League, every detail matters. If you don’t give everything, you pay for it.”
Mbappé ended by calling on the Santiago Bernabéu to play its part. “I ask the fans to come with the desire to support the team. We’re not eliminated, we’re doing well in La Liga, and if the Bernabéu is behind us, we’ll have a great match on Sunday.”
