Kylian Mbappé has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent comments about China, which sparked a backlash in the Asian country and reportedly led to broadcasts of Real Madrid matches being cancelled. The French striker issued an official statement in Chinese, French, and English, apologizing for remarks that offended the Chinese community.

"During a recent interview, I reacted to an image of myself that was used to depict me. My comment was unfortunate, and I now understand that it has hurt many people in China and within the Chinese community worldwide," Mbappé explained in a statement released in Paris on Tuesday, October 27. The Real Madrid forward acknowledged his mistake and the hurt caused by his words, although he did not provide further details.

Mbappé concluded his statement with a direct apology and a message of respect for China: "I apologize to everyone my words may have offended. It was absolutely not my intention. I have a deep respect for the Chinese people and their history, and I am sincerely sorry."

The statement comes after the controversy prompted LaLiga to intervene and censor the Real Madrid star's comments. Mbappé had previously said he found the memes circulating after his advertising campaign in China amusing.

"The one I laughed at the most is the one where they use my face as a Chinese dictator. I use it a lot with my friends," the Frenchman said at the time. He has now apologized for the remarks as he seeks to bring the controversy to an end.
