Antonio Mateu Lahoz, referee analyst for Movistar Fútbol, was critical of the performance of referee Alejandro Quintero González in the match that Real Madrid lost 0-2 against Celta.
“The truth is that referee Quintero González was too fired up,” said Mateu Lahoz, who stopped refereeing at age 46 by decision of the Technical Refereeing Committee.
The 48-year-old former referee believes that the referee “did not have the proper emotional balance, because he acted very hastily.”
Mateu highlighted what he considers errors in the sending-off of Fran García, in which Quintero González stopped a “promising attack” by Celta led by Borja Iglesias.
He was also highly critical of the decision to order Aurélien Tchouaméni to retake a throw-in from his own half during stoppage time, a call that provoked anger from the Real Madrid players and led to Álvaro Carreras being sent off, followed by Rodrygo’s now-famous shout: “You have to respect, look where you are.”
“Don’t complicate things. In refereeing, the difficult decisions come naturally. Let them take the ball. You are not gaining any advantage. This is about reading the game, and for that, you need experience,” he emphasized.
Mateu Lahoz added that “I am sure Alejandro Quintero González will learn a lot from all this,” and reminded everyone that “the best thing a referee can do is prevent and not act, because if you act too late, you can no longer fix it.”
