However, one of the most unforgettable comebacks he witnessed came from the bench: the famous remontada against Manchester City in 2022. “Wow, that was incredible. Those are magical nights at the Bernabéu that I was fortunate to live through and enjoyed immensely. And I still enjoy them just as much every time I return to the Bernabéu. Since I arrived in 2006, the stadium has given me wonderful memories. I have only experienced special and extraordinary moments. These comebacks are unique things that happen in football, but they usually only happen at the Bernabéu,” he explained in an interview with MARCA.
The phenomenon that occurs at the Bernabéu is something Marcelo admits he cannot fully describe. “Many people have asked me about it, and I do not know how to explain it, because these are things you have to experience in person, by being there on magical nights like that. I do not know, you simply have to live it. There is no real way to understand it, no way to explain it. It is unbelievable.”
Could it be that even the opponents start to believe in Madrid’s comeback magic during these matches? “That too. I think it happens. In many games I have seen the faces of rival players, as if they were thinking: ‘Oh, this Bernabéu effect is real.’ Yes, absolutely,” Marcelo added.
