Xabi Alonso’s complicated moment at Real Madrid is being closely followed in Germany, especially in the Bundesliga, where his coaching journey truly began. At Bayer Leverkusen, the club that launched his managerial career, concern is growing over the situation the Basque coach is facing at the Bernabéu.

Fernando Carro, CEO of the German club, openly addressed the issue in an interview with Sky, making it clear that Alonso’s struggles have not gone unnoticed.

“During the international break, I spent a weekend in Madrid, and both the coaching staff and the family came to our house twice,” Carro revealed. “We have a very close relationship. For three years, we were practically a family.”

That bond, he explained, remains intact. “We follow each other constantly. They watch our games and we watch theirs. Tomorrow I’ll be watching Real Madrid, and I’m sure today they’ll be watching Leverkusen against Cologne. There’s a lot of mutual affection and ongoing contact.”

Carro was more direct when addressing the environment Alonso is dealing with in Madrid. From his perspective, the context is radically different from the one Alonso enjoyed in Germany.

“We know he’s a coach with enormous talent, but the situation in Madrid is different,” he said. “If a president says a coach is a necessary evil, if the coach is left alone and ends up being the only one criticized, then the circumstances change completely. That never happened here. At Leverkusen, we all pulled in the same direction and never left the coach politically isolated.”

Finally, Carro left the door wide open should Alonso’s situation at Real Madrid worsen. His message was clear and unmistakable.

“The door is open,” he stated. “If he wants to return, he can do so at any time.” He even extended that openness to Florian Wirtz, whose future is also uncertain: “If both of them want to come back, they’re always welcome.”
