LaLiga has introduced new measures requiring referees in the domestic competition to speak after the matches they officiate. According to Diario AS, officials will have to explain their decisions through the designated broadcasting channels, DAZN and Movistar, just as players and coaches do. The new rule is expected to come into effect this weekend, with Matchday 11 marking a significant change in the competition's history.
Under the new protocol, referees will also receive additional financial compensation through a salary bonus. The measure follows negotiations between the referees' association, LaLiga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
The first steps towards greater referee involvement in television coverage have already been taken during the first two and a half months of the season, with officials appearing in pre-match commentary for First and Second Division games on the channels holding the broadcasting rights.
According to Diario AS, LaLiga and the Federation are promoting the initiative to protect and improve the public image of refereeing. The aim is to give officials an opportunity to explain their decisions, particularly in controversial situations.
For several seasons, the institutions have sought to bring referees closer to fans and help them better understand the officials' perspective. The introduction of RefCam, a camera worn by the referee during matches, was another initiative designed to achieve that objective.
