Real Madrid made a heartfelt gesture for their former captain, Marcelo Vieira, who recently announced his retirement from professional football. The Brazilian left-back, who had been the player with the most titles in the club's history, retired last Thursday after his contract with Fluminense was terminated. In light of this, Real Madrid honored the legend before their derby against Atlético de Madrid.
During the tribute, Luka Modric presented Marcelo with a commemorative shirt, and the entire Santiago Bernabéu rose to applaud their former player. The Real Madrid squad also joined in, giving their unanimous applause to one of football's great legends of this century.
However, a notable absence from the tribute was Atlético de Madrid. While it is common for rival teams to join in on such occasions, Atlético's players remained on their side of the pitch, not participating in the applause. Only their captain, Jan Oblak, and coach Diego Simeone, joined the tribute, clapping for Marcelo, while the rest of the team stood by, sparking reactions online.
