Kylian Mbappé will be sidelined for around three weeks after continued issues with his knee, dealing a significant blow to Real Madrid. An MRI scan carried out on Wednesday confirmed the extent of the problem and prompted the club to take a cautious approach.
According to L’Equipe, the French forward will be unavailable for at least three weeks, which rules him out of the Spanish Super Cup scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia between January 7 and 11. The newspaper reports that Mbappé had been playing through discomfort in recent La Liga matches. While the issue was initially not considered serious by the club’s medical staff, the latest test results raised concern and led to the decision to stop him.
Mbappé reportedly began to worry when he noticed he could no longer accelerate properly during sprints. Having featured in every match so far this season, the accumulated strain appears to have caught up with him. The focus now shifts to whether the estimated recovery period can be shortened, although his absence from the Spanish Super Cup is already confirmed.
Real Madrid later issued an official medical update to confirm the situation. “Following tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappé by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a sprain in his left knee. His recovery will be monitored,” the club said in a brief statement.
