Toni Kroos spoke to Real Madrid TV after receiving the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Real Madrid legend expressed his pride, saying: “I am very happy. I have received several awards in my career, but this is the highest honor you can receive in Germany. And since it also recognizes the work of the Foundation, where we help sick children and their families, the award means even more.”
Kroos also shared his surprise at seeing some familiar faces at the ceremony. “I knew Florentino Pérez and the President of Germany would be there, but I did not know my former teammates would attend. Not even Antonio Rüdiger, who is a very good friend, told me. It was a surprise and it makes me happy to know that I had great teammates and wonderful people around me.”
The German midfielder highlighted the symbolic importance of the venue. “When they told me the event would take place at the Bernabéu, I was very happy because it feels like the perfect place to receive this distinction. It has been my home for 10 years and I know it will always feel like home. I always enjoy being in this stadium.”
Kroos also reflected on his farewell from Real Madrid last season. “The whole day was spectacular. Weeks earlier, I had said I wanted a farewell at the Bernabéu when there was nothing left to play for, and that we could celebrate being champions so I could enjoy the moment. That is exactly what happened, and from the moment I left home until I returned, I enjoyed everything. What they prepared for me, the affection from the fans, my teammates, the president and the coach made it truly special.”
