For several months, discussions about a possible NBA expansion into Europe have gained momentum, with plans to create a new continental competition featuring some of Europe’s top basketball clubs. From the very beginning, Real Madrid has been one of the teams most closely linked to the project. However, no agreement has ever been officially confirmed, partly due to continued pressure from the EuroLeague for the club to remain in the competition in the coming seasons.
In recent weeks, the situation appeared to be moving closer to the NBA-backed project, although differing reports suggested that Real Madrid was still weighing its options and negotiating with both parties. Now, a significant development within the EuroLeague could influence the club’s future decision.
According to journalist Aris Barkas, Chus Bueno has been appointed as the new CEO of the EuroLeague. This is a key move, as Bueno was the candidate supported by Real Madrid. His appointment could open the door to improved dialogue between the EuroLeague and the NBA, potentially easing tensions between the two competitions.
This does not mean that Real Madrid has decided to abandon the NBA project or commit fully to staying in the EuroLeague. However, it does add an important new variable to the equation. Leaving the EuroLeague to join the NBA’s European league would likely mean spending an entire season without European competition, as the new NBA-backed project is not expected to begin until the 2027–28 season.
For now, Real Madrid’s future remains uncertain, and recent developments suggest that all options are still on the table.
