Real Madrid appear to be moving closer to the NBA Europe project. The Spanish club, which has not yet renewed its EuroLeague license, could become one of the pioneers of the new competition now taking shape.

This was confirmed by Jorge Garbajosa, president of FIBA Europe, during an appearance on COPE’s Tiempo de Juego. According to Garbajosa, Real Madrid’s interest is real and ongoing.

“We know that Real Madrid have shown interest, and the NBA are in direct, high-level talks with the club,” Garbajosa told COPE. “We know it’s an attractive option for them, just as it is for other clubs, as Adam Silver said the other day.”

Following the NBA commissioner’s press conference in Berlin and a subsequent meeting in London, the NBA Europe project is beginning to take form. “The feeling we have is that this has already started and that it’s going to happen,” Garbajosa stated.

“It’s been a very intense few days. Last Monday we held a meeting with many stakeholders, including basketball clubs, investors, and football clubs, all of whom wanted to understand where the project is heading.”

Garbajosa also addressed the financial reality facing EuroLeague teams, highlighting the losses many clubs are sustaining. He pointed out that teams are “losing an average of 20, 25, or even 30 million euros a year without any kind of return,” as he explained on COPE radio.
