One of the most unforgettable moments in football history came in 1993, when Real Madrid suffered a shocking defeat against Tenerife on the final matchday of the season. It wasn’t just one heartbreak — it was the second consecutive league title that slipped away in the Canary Islanders. With former Real Madrid player Jorge Valdano managing Tenerife, the team denied Los Blancos the La Liga crown in both 1992 and 1993, handing the title to FC Barcelona.
Now, more than three decades later, one of the key figures from that decisive 1992/93 match, Iván Zamorano, has opened up about that painful loss — a defeat that sent the league trophy to Catalonia when Real Madrid only needed to win to secure it.
In an interview with Josep Pedrerol on El Cafelito, the Chilean striker did not hold back his feelings: “Do you remember when we lost that league title against Tenerife? We were robbed with two clear penalties,” Zamorano recalled. “I was sent off just for jumping higher than the Tenerife defender. There were some very strange, very suspicious things going on.”
Zamorano also revealed troubling details about the team’s journey before that match: “Our president made us travel on two separate planes. Some players were on one, and the rest of us — about twelve — were on the other. Our plane broke down mid-flight; the air supply failed. We were suffocating and had to put on oxygen masks. The heat was unbearable. We had to return to the airport and wait three or four hours before flying again. That’s when everything started to go wrong,” he explained.
