Real Madrid were pushing desperately for a draw, fully aware that failing to do so could cost them a place in the top eight. With time running out, Arbeloa made a triple substitution in the 78th minute in an attempt to find a third goal.

One of the changes saw Arda Güler replaced by Cestero, and the Turkish midfielder did not hide his frustration. Movistar’s cameras caught Güler leaving the pitch visibly upset, gesturing toward the bench and repeatedly saying, “Why always me?”

Güler had been one of Real Madrid’s most involved players in the second half. He took responsibility in the build-up and delivered the brilliant cut-back that allowed Mbappé to score his second goal of the night. However, Arbeloa was looking for more speed and attacking presence in the box, which also led to Brahim’s introduction.

The other substitution saw Alaba come on for Huijsen, who had been struggling physically in the minutes leading up to the change.
