The newspaper AS interviewed Abián Perdomo, who spent thirteen years working at Valdebebas. Few people know Real Madrid’s youth academy as well as he does, and he offered an in-depth look at its current prospects during his conversation with the Madrid-based outlet.
Perdomo praised several promising talents, saying: “Jacobo Ramón has the profile of a top center-back, very comfortable on the ball and ideal for a team that wants to dominate matches. Chema has an extraordinary understanding of the game, works tirelessly, and possesses an imposing physique. I’m confident they will go far; they are two of my favorites.”
When asked about Gonzalo García, he added: “Can he become Real Madrid’s number 9? Time will tell. It’s a position that has historically been occupied by world-class strikers. Gonzalo is fantastic, and even if he is not yet ready to be the starting forward, he has the quality to challenge whoever holds that role. He has character and a competitive mentality that is hard to find. He is the type of player any club would want.”
Regarding players who are on loan or were sold with buy-back clauses, Perdomo highlighted one name above the rest: “I think Álex Jiménez is excellent. He is currently at Bournemouth on loan from Milan. He has the potential to reach the first team and a real chance to become the club’s future right-back, as long as he maintains balance between his game and mentality. Jacobo Ramón could also earn a place in the first team.”
Finally, Perdomo compared Madrid’s youth setup with Barça’s, explaining: “Barcelona has given more opportunities to young players because of their situation, but in terms of quality, Real Madrid’s youth players are at a similar or even slightly higher level.”
