Former Real Madrid team doctor Niko Mihic has stirred controversy in the football world by questioning the purpose of wristbands and bandages worn by players during matches. His remarks, laced with irony and suspicion, have ignited debate over whether these accessories serve a genuine medical purpose—or something else entirely.
Mihic hinted at possible ulterior motives behind the trend, saying, “Maybe they’re into strategy games, playing too much table football and developing tendonitis… or maybe it’s just that they haven’t bribed Negreira.” His sarcasm continued as he added, “Any doctor knows that if you want easier venous access, you go for the hands and wrists.”
His comments drew particular attention because several Barcelona players—including Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, and Frenkie de Jong—are frequently seen with wrist bandages during matches.
Not everyone shares Mihic’s skepticism. Dr. Antoni Mora, a specialist in sports medicine, dismissed the idea of medical or performance-related uses. “It’s pure superstition,” he explained. “Players develop a habit, and if they play well while wearing it, they keep it.”
While Mihic stopped short of making direct accusations, his comments have reopened discussions on medical transparency and doping protocols in elite football. The true reason for the widespread use of wrist wraps remains debated, dividing opinion between superstition, style, and suspicion.
