Florentino Pérez and UEFA are reportedly exploring a proposal that could significantly reshape the broadcasting model of European football.
According to Vozpópuli, discussions are underway regarding the possibility of making European club competitions available free-to-air across the continent. The idea is said to be inspired by the recent broadcasting approach used for the FIFA Club World Cup, where part of the rights package was offered to free-access platforms to increase global visibility.
The project remains in the early stages, but it has already generated debate throughout European football. The objective would be to move away from the traditional pay-TV system that currently dominates broadcasts of competitions such as the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.
Florentino Pérez is once again emerging as a key figure in discussions surrounding the future of football broadcasting. The Real Madrid president has long advocated for new audiovisual and digital models aimed at increasing fan accessibility, particularly during the push for the European Super League project, which included plans for a free viewing platform.
If implemented, the new proposal could dramatically increase the reach and visibility of European competitions by making matches accessible to a wider audience. However, it would also raise major financial questions regarding how clubs and governing bodies would replace the massive revenues currently generated through exclusive television contracts.
