2026 FIFA World Cup is already generating huge anticipation as it will be hosted across United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament will also mark a historic change, expanding from 32 to 48 participating teams.

However, the expansion is not the only novelty. FIFA is preparing several rule adjustments designed to speed up the game and reduce wasted time, aiming to deliver a more dynamic experience for both players and fans.

Here are some of the changes expected to be implemented:

Faster substitutions
Players who are substituted will have just 10 seconds to leave the field after being notified. If they fail to do so, the incoming player will be forced to wait an additional minute before entering the pitch.

Quicker throw-ins
Throw-ins must be taken within 5 seconds. If a team exceeds that limit, possession will be awarded to the opposing side.

Medical treatment off the pitch
Players requiring medical attention will have to receive treatment off the field and must wait at least one minute before being allowed to return to play.

Expanded VAR powers
The Video Assistant Referee could also intervene in second yellow card decisions and corner kick calls if there is a clear and collective refereeing error.

Through these adjustments, FIFA hopes to increase effective playing time and make the tournament more entertaining, turning the 2026 World Cup into one of the most dynamic editions in the competition’s history.
