World football could be on the verge of a major change. FIFA and IFAB have shown openness to Arsène Wenger’s proposal, which would radically alter the offside rule, according to RMC Sport. Under the suggested adjustment, an attacker would only be considered offside if their entire body is ahead of the last defenders, effectively eliminating controversial calls based on millimeters.
The proposal will be discussed at the General Assembly in February, but one clear beneficiary could be Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé. With his extraordinary pace—among the fastest in world football—the French forward would become an even greater threat to opposing defenses if the new rule is implemented starting with the 2026/27 season.
Last season, Mbappé was caught offside 44 times in La Liga, making him one of the players most frequently penalized in this way. This season, he has already been flagged 18 times, slightly limiting his attacking impact. Many of these offsides, however, are due to tiny margins visible only with VAR. If Wenger’s proposal is adopted, Mbappé could see a significant increase in his attacking effectiveness.
According to RMC Sport, the measure could represent one of the most significant football revolutions in recent years, potentially turning Real Madrid into an even more prolific goal-scoring team.
