Enrique Riquelme’s expected candidacy for the Real Madrid presidency has reportedly begun working on an ambitious sporting project centered around Erling Haaland and Jürgen Klopp, according to El Confidencial.
The businessman from Alicante is preparing to challenge Florentino Pérez, whose reported plan is to bring José Mourinho back to the club after two seasons without major trophies. Riquelme’s proposal would instead focus on a new era led by Klopp from the bench and Haaland as the team’s marquee signing.
The report claims that talks have already started with Haaland’s representatives despite the Norwegian recently renewing his contract with Manchester City until 2034. Riquelme’s camp reportedly believes the current situation at City following Pep Guardiola’s departure could open the door to negotiations.
According to El Confidencial, the strategy would involve convincing Haaland to submit a formal transfer request, a mechanism in English football that obliges clubs to negotiate a potential departure.
At the same time, several meetings are said to have taken place with Klopp in an attempt to persuade the German coach to leave his role within the Red Bull structure and take charge at the Santiago Bernabéu.
If Riquelme were to win the elections and become Real Madrid president, the club’s sporting direction would change dramatically. Mourinho’s reported return would be replaced by Klopp’s attacking style of football, while Haaland would potentially join an attack already featuring Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius.
