Enrique Riquelme is seriously considering running in the upcoming presidential elections at Real Madrid. According to sources close to the businessman from Alicante, the early election announcement did not come as a surprise, although a final decision will depend on the official start of the electoral process.
Riquelme is the main shareholder of the Cox Group, a major renewable energy company operating in more than 30 countries. In recent weeks, he has attracted significant attention in the international financial press following two major operations: the acquisition of Iberdrola Mexico for around $4 billion and a record $2 billion bond issuance in the United States. He has also appeared on global lists recognizing influential figures in the fight against climate change.
During his recent press conference, Florentino Pérez appeared to indirectly reference Riquelme when mentioning someone with a “Mexican accent,” despite the businessman being from Cox, Alicante.
Pérez also made another indirect reference when speaking about “those kids,” in apparent connection to the group of young and successful businessmen linked to Riquelme. Several members of that circle are prominent company executives in Spain and passionate Real Madrid supporters who could reportedly back his candidacy if he decides to enter the race.
Riquelme recently attended a tribute event dedicated to the heroes of La Séptima, organized by Real Madrid supporters’ clubs in Alicante. He shared the main table with Pedja Mijatovic and Fernando Sanz, who were among the main guests of the evening.
