Manuel Ángel experienced a dream night after making his UEFA Champions League debut during Real Madrid’s 3-0 victory over Manchester City.
Head coach Álvaro Arbeloa handed the 21 year old midfielder his first appearance in Europe’s elite competition, sending him onto the pitch in the 76th minute to replace the impressive Thiago Pitarch. Ángel helped the team control the final stages of the match as Madrid comfortably protected their clean sheet.
After the final whistle, the young midfielder shared a memorable moment with Bernardo Silva, captain of Manchester City, as the two players exchanged shirts. Ángel then ran toward the stands to embrace his father in an emotional scene.
The moment quickly turned moving, as his father was left in tears while hugging his son tightly for several seconds. Speaking to DAZN shortly afterward, he struggled to hide his pride.
“I feel a great sense of pride,” he said.
“I’ve been fighting for a long time and I’ve achieved it. Now he has to keep working. Since he was little he has done everything possible to reach his dream, and now he must continue working for more success.”
“Every sacrifice has its reward, right? And those rewards are starting to arrive,” he added.
Ángel previously served as captain of Real Madrid Castilla under Arbeloa, and the coach has continued to show faith in the midfielder since promoting him to the first team.
