Egypt booked their place in the next round after defeating Australia in a penalty shootout, with the Pharaohs converting all of their spot kicks to seal the victory.
Real Madrid played an unexpected role in Egypt's preparation. Before the shootout, the Egyptian players reportedly studied footage from a previous La Liga match between Real Madrid and Levante, focusing on Levante goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, who was also Australia's goalkeeper in the match.
Ryan was expected to be Australia's key figure from the penalty spot after replacing Patrick Beach in the 119th minute. However, he was unable to save any of Egypt's penalties.
One of the clips analyzed by the Egyptian squad featured Kylian Mbappé converting a penalty against Ryan during a La Liga match last season. The players reportedly examined the goalkeeper's positioning during that attempt before taking their own penalties.
Images of the Egyptian players gathered around an iPad watching footage from the Real Madrid vs. Levante match quickly went viral on social media.
