The Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) has appointed Alejandro Muñiz Ruiz as the referee for this weekend’s Real Madrid vs Sevilla match at the Santiago Bernabéu, with Javier Iglesias Villanueva assigned to VAR. The decision has immediately raised concerns, as both officials were involved in one of the most controversial refereeing incidents of recent times, when Carlos Romero escaped with only a yellow card after a reckless tackle from behind on Kylian Mbappé.

This appointment has been interpreted as another strong statement from the CTA toward Real Madrid. Just last weekend, the Alavés vs Real Madrid match was overseen by Víctor García Verdura, a referee remembered for being selected by FC Barcelona to officiate the Joan Gamper Trophy.

The combination of García Verdura last week and Muñiz Ruiz for the Sevilla match has intensified the perception of a growing rift between Real Madrid and the refereeing establishment. These decisions, coming shortly after the CTA’s response to Florentino Pérez’s criticism, further deepen the ongoing tension between the club and Spanish referees.
