Real Madrid left Mendizorroza with three points, but the victory was once again overshadowed by refereeing controversy. Goals from Mbappé and Rodrygo were enough to defeat a determined Alavés side, yet the match was marked by a highly debatable decision. García Verdura failed to award what appeared to be a clear penalty after Vinicius was brought down inside the box. Neither the on-field referee nor VAR, overseen by González Fuertes, considered the challenge worthy of a spot kick.

The decision reignited criticism of LaLiga’s refereeing, especially given González Fuertes’ history with Real Madrid. This was not the first time his involvement in a match featuring the club has raised eyebrows. Particular attention has been drawn to comments he made prior to a Copa del Rey final, when he openly threatened legal action against Real Madrid, a situation that even put that final at risk of being postponed.

Despite repeated complaints and the ongoing controversy, González Fuertes now operates exclusively in the VAR room, and according to Cadena SER’s Carrusel Deportivo, the CTA has no intention of removing him from matches involving Real Madrid. The refereeing committee believes the incident with Vinicius was handled correctly and has therefore dismissed the club’s objections.

Florentino Pérez addressed the situation with irony during Real Madrid’s traditional Christmas lunch, recalling that the club had once again been overseen by a referee who had previously threatened legal action against them, while fouls on Vinicius and Rodrygo continued to go unpunished, something he described as “the novelty of this season.”
