The Atlético Madrid-Real Madrid derby has left behind significant controversy, with the debate surrounding the match’s refereeing decisions expected to continue in the coming days.

Attention will now turn to the VAR review period, after which the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) is expected to provide explanations regarding the most controversial incidents. According to AS, however, the committee is already aware of several errors made during the match.

The CTA reportedly believes that Kang-In Lee should have been sent off for his challenge on Federico Valverde, while also considering Dean Huijsen’s red card following a VAR review to have been the correct decision.

Ortiz Arias was given the responsibility of refereeing the biggest derby in LaLiga after an impressive season and strong start to the current campaign. However, according to the report, the match proved difficult for the referee, with all three major controversial incidents involving incorrect decisions on the pitch and VAR intervention required in two of them.

The first incident involved Jude Bellingham and Cuti Romero. Ortiz Arias initially awarded a foul against Bellingham and showed the Real Madrid midfielder a yellow card. VAR then alerted him to the fact that Romero had actually committed the foul on the Real Madrid player, with the challenge potentially warranting a red card.

After reviewing the incident, Ortiz Arias decided not to send Romero off. The CTA has reportedly defended the referee in this case, acknowledging that there had been confusion over the incident.

A more serious error followed shortly afterwards when Kang-In Lee made a heavy challenge on Valverde. The referee allowed play to continue without showing a card, while VAR did not intervene. According to AS, the CTA believes the challenge should have resulted in a red card, making it one of the clearest refereeing errors of the match.

The committee also reportedly agrees with the decision to send off Huijsen after his challenge on Giuliano Simeone inside the box. Ortiz Arias initially awarded Atlético a penalty but did not show the Real Madrid defender a red card, despite Huijsen grabbing his opponent and making no attempt to play the ball.

VAR subsequently intervened and corrected the decision, with Huijsen eventually shown a red card. The CTA considers the dismissal to have been clear and justified.
