Thibaut Courtois has made it clear that retirement is still far from his plans, with the Real Madrid goalkeeper revealing that he wants to continue playing for several more years.
The Belgian remains a key player for José Mourinho and has now offered a significant indication of how long he hopes to continue at the highest level.
“I still want to play football for another five or six years,” Courtois affirmed.
At 34, Courtois’ ambition could see him continue competing at the elite level until the age of 39 or 40. His plans also fit with Real Madrid’s current approach, as the club retains complete confidence in the Belgian and intends to rely on him for as long as he maintains his high level of performance.
Real Madrid are nevertheless monitoring the goalkeeper market and continuing to develop young options for the future. However, Courtois’ plans mean there is no immediate need to accelerate the process of finding his long-term successor.
Competition, physical condition and performance will ultimately determine how long Courtois remains the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. For now, though, the Belgian has made his intentions clear: if his fitness and level allow it, he wants to remain between the posts for another five or six years.
