Thibaut Courtois will be sidelined for around a month and a half after medical tests confirmed a muscle injury in the rectus femoris of his right quadriceps. The setback represents a significant blow for Real Madrid at a decisive stage of the season, forcing Álvaro Arbeloa’s side to face several key matches without their starting goalkeeper.

The timing of the injury could hardly be worse. Real Madrid have important fixtures ahead, including the Madrid derby and, most notably, the quarter final tie of the Champions League against Bayern Munich.

According to the most optimistic forecasts from the club’s medical staff, Courtois is expected to miss seven matches in total, five in La Liga along with both legs of the Champions League quarter finals. If his recovery progresses as planned and Madrid manage to overcome Bayern Munich, the Belgian goalkeeper could potentially return in time for a possible Champions League semi final, scheduled between April 28 and May 6.
