The youth academy in Spain is a trend nowadays, largely due to the economic crisis of the clubs, although the talent in the training is there and is reflected in Report 436 of the CIES of 2023, which places Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Athletic Bilbao in the Top-10 of the ranking of the best quarries in Europe, with La Fábrica and La Masía occupying the first two positions, the Academy of Paterna, the fourth, and Lezama, the seventh.
The CIES Report, published last week, includes the number of players trained in the different quarries who are playing in one of the five major European leagues: England, Germany, Italy, France, and Spain. The criterion followed by the CIES is the same one established by UEFA to classify youth footballers, which is that the players have been in a club for at least three seasons between the ages of 15 and 21.
With 44 players spread across the five major leagues, Real Madrid is ranked first. With 40 players, Barcelona comes in second in the classification. With 29 players, Valencia, which has been in the Top-10 for five years running, rises to fourth place, trailing Olympique Lyon by just two players. For its part, Athletic Bilbao has 24 players spread among the five major leagues, with a sizable portion of those players being from its own team. PSG (28) and United (26), trailed by the red and white quarry.
