Dani Carvajal used social media to defend the values he believes define the captaincy at Real Madrid. The discussion began after a moment during last Friday’s match against Celta Vigo at Balaídos, when the defender applauded Iago Aspas as the Celta captain prepared to enter the pitch. The gesture sparked criticism from some Madrid supporters, but Carvajal chose to respond publicly.
At the time of the moment, the team coached by Álvaro Arbeloa was drawing 1-1 away from home and seeing its hopes in the La Liga title race slipping away. Celta coach Claudio Giráldez had just decided to introduce his captain. As Aspas waited on the touchline to enter the match, television cameras showed the Real Madrid players warming up nearby, including Carvajal applauding the veteran forward.
The reaction from some fans prompted the Madrid defender to clarify his intentions online. Responding directly to criticism, the academy graduate explained that his applause was "a gesture of respect. Respect for a legend of our league." He also emphasized the message he wanted to convey, adding that "values come before everything else."
