Former Paco Buyo shared his thoughts after Real Madrid secured their place in the Champions League quarterfinals by eliminating Manchester City.
Speaking on El Programa de Ortega, the former Madrid goalkeeper praised both Thibaut Courtois and Andriy Lunin for their performances in the tie.
Before the match, coach Álvaro Arbeloa described Courtois as the best goalkeeper in Real Madrid’s history, and Buyo joined the debate: “He’s one of the greats and could be the best based on his qualities. Madrid has always had great goalkeepers, but right now he is clearly the best in the world.”
At the same time, Buyo rejected direct comparisons with legendary names such as Ricardo Zamora, Iker Casillas and Bodo Illgner, emphasizing that the club has always been defined by its outstanding goalkeepers.
He also praised Lunin’s reliability: “Lunin responded magnificently. He’s a guarantee. In the last Champions League he was at an extraordinary level.”
Looking ahead, Real Madrid will face Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals, but Buyo remains confident in Los Blancos: “You always have to believe in Real Madrid, no matter how bad things are. With Vicente del Bosque we were fifth or sixth in La Liga and still won the Champions League.”
Buyo also took aim at Pep Guardiola over comments about Madrid’s Champions League record: “He says Madrid played in 100 Champions Leagues and only won 15. But he’s coached teams like Barcelona, Bayern and City and doesn’t have that many either. For example, Dani Carvajal has more Champions League titles than his former team.”
