Brahim Díaz issued a heartfelt apology after Morocco’s defeat to Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations final. The Real Madrid midfielder, who missed the decisive penalty that could have secured the title for the Atlas Lions, took full responsibility for the moment and did not hide his disappointment. “My heart aches. I made a mistake yesterday, and I take full responsibility and sincerely apologize,” he wrote on his social media accounts.

The Moroccan international admitted that the setback will remain with him for a long time. “It will be hard to recover, because this wound doesn’t heal easily,” he confessed, expressing the frustration and sadness of seeing a historic opportunity slip away on home soil. Despite the pain, Brahim also took time to thank those who stood by him throughout the tournament. “I dreamed of this title thanks to all the love you’ve given me, every message, every show of support.”

Rather than staying silent, Brahim chose to speak directly to Moroccan fans and everyone who believed in him. “I will try. Not for myself, but for all those who believed in me and for all those who suffered with me,” he added, promising to keep pushing forward to repay that support on the pitch.

Although the missed penalty has come to define the final, it does not overshadow his overall performance in the tournament. Brahim finished as the Africa Cup of Nations’ top scorer and was Morocco’s main attacking reference throughout their run to the final. He now returns to Real Madrid carrying a painful memory, but also having taken responsibility in the most difficult moment.

Support quickly followed from the Real Madrid dressing room. Several teammates, including Asencio, Rodrygo, Huijsen, Alaba, and Vinicius, left messages of encouragement, while Luka Modric, with whom Brahim shared several seasons at the club, also showed his backing.
