According to José María García, Deputy Minister of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure of the Community of Madrid, the renovation of the Bernabéu metro station is progressing on schedule. The project, which began in February 2024 with a budget of 66 million euros, is expected to be completed in 2027 and will transform the station into a 12,000-square-meter facility.
The key milestone will be March 6, a date that marks both the 80th anniversary of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium and the 125th anniversary of Real Madrid. The station, originally opened in 1982 for the World Cup under the name Lima and later renamed Santiago Bernabéu, will now adopt the simplified name Bernabéu in line with the stadium.
The new station will triple its size, expanding from 4,843 square meters to around 12,400, with construction currently 35 percent complete. This expansion aims to better accommodate the flow of fans on match days and serve as a central transport hub for the 2030 World Cup, with more than 34,000 passengers expected on event days.
The upgraded station will include Metro de Madrid’s latest innovations: advanced turnstiles, modern ticket machines, full accessibility features, 12 panoramic elevators, and 24 escalators connecting directly to the platforms. A spacious concourse will replace the old corridors, offering visibility of intermediate levels and platforms. The design will be closely tied to Real Madrid’s identity, history, and achievements, while also allowing customization for major sporting events.
