Karim Benzema has opened up to L’Equipe about what he sees happening inside Real Madrid right now, and he doesn’t believe Xabi Alonso is the one who has to fix everything. When he was asked whether Alonso should solve the team’s connection problems, Benzema said he doesn’t think the coach can do much more. “He already picks the best players,” he explained, adding that once you’re on the pitch, the responsibility belongs to the players themselves.
Benzema spoke from experience. He said that if your teammate is performing better, you have to accept it, and that problems start when someone refuses to acknowledge that another player is scoring more goals. According to him, this is what makes things complicated when five or six top players share the same dressing room.
He also pointed out that while the goalscorer often gets more attention, nobody achieves anything alone. “You always need the others,” he insisted, reminding that every player contributes to the team in a different way.
One of the issues Benzema sees is the absence of a senior figure with enough authority to speak directly to Bellingham, Mbappé, or Vinicius Jr. He believes the coach can deliver messages, but it doesn’t hit the same as when it comes from a veteran teammate, especially in today’s version of football, which he describes as more complex than ever.
Right now, Real Madrid are facing a delicate moment with Xabi Alonso. Reports suggest he has limited time to turn things around if the team continue dropping points. The pressure is there, and everyone feels it.
Even so, Benzema made it clear that if it were up to him, he would stand by Alonso and give him the time he needs. For him, stability matters, and he believes Alonso can guide the team forward if given the right support.
