Athenea del Castillo, one of the captains of Real Madrid’s women’s team, welcomed the New Year on Cantabria TV, where she spoke about life at the club, the responsibility of wearing the armband, and Florentino Pérez’s role in the growth of women’s football.
“A bit of responsibility comes with what Real Madrid represents, because it’s the best club in the world. Being able to represent it as one of the captains, after many years of work, seasons, and matches, is a source of pride not only for me, but also for my family and for everyone in Cantabria. I hope it continues like this for many years,” said the player, who has spent four seasons at Valdebebas, during her conversation with Adrián Fernández.
Reflecting on her journey, Athenea admitted she is still processing everything she has achieved. “Four years… I don’t think I’m fully aware of it yet. You reach the best place in the world and sometimes you don’t even realize it. When I retire from football, hopefully many years from now, that’s when I’ll look back and understand everything I’ve achieved, how much I’ve grown and matured as a person. The goal is to keep improving, keep winning, and wish myself the best for this year,” she explained.
The conversation then turned to Florentino Pérez when Fernández asked Athenea: "I'll tell you a secret: at home, we call the president, Florentino Pérez, 'Uncle Floren.' Is he really as great as he seems?". Athenea did not hesitate to praise him. “He’s very approachable and is investing heavily in Spanish women’s football, and we’re extremely grateful. He always looks out for us, and having him as president has helped us grow a lot. He may seem a bit imposing at first, but up close he really wins you over. Everyone asks me the same thing, and the truth is that he’s charming,” she concluded.
