Raúl Asencio has issued a heartfelt apology to Real Madrid fans via Instagram following a disappointing Club World Cup campaign. In his message, the center-back acknowledged he “wasn’t up to scratch” during the tournament, expressing regret for not meeting expectations in a competition that demanded his very best.

Asencio entered the Club World Cup in strong form and riding high from a solid season. However, early setbacks quickly shifted his trajectory. It began with a penalty conceded on his debut against Al Hilal, followed by a costly red card just seven minutes into the match against Pachuca after a foul on Salomón Rondón. Those mistakes saw him dropped from the starting lineup and fast-tracked the return of Rüdiger.

Though he was later handed another opportunity—first in the dramatic final against Dortmund and then against PSG due to Huijsen’s red card—Asencio failed to capitalize. In the clash with PSG, he gifted the opening goal with a poor first touch that led to a turnover in a hostile setting. Dembélé pounced on the mistake, finding Fabián who made no mistake in front of goal.

Fully aware of his underwhelming performance, Asencio shared a reflective message: "Madridistas, a season in which I fulfilled the dream of being part of the best club in the world is coming to an end, but it ended in the way I least expected. I feel like I didn’t live up to my expectations in a Club World Cup that demanded the utmost."

After a season in which he surprisingly secured a regular spot in the starting eleven, the Canary Island native has endured a World Cup campaign to forget. As his own words suggest, it's now time to “disconnect and recharge.”
