Real Madrid’s academy continues to shine, but Álvaro Arbeloa now faces the challenge of managing without several of his key players. Paco Gallardo has announced Spain’s squad for the U-20 World Cup in Chile, and five Madrid youngsters have made the list: Fran González, Jesús Fortea, Diego Aguado, Thiago Pitarch, and Cristian David.

The tournament kicks off on September 27, with Spain debuting the next day against Morocco. They will then face Mexico on October 1 and Brazil on October 4. This means Arbeloa will be without his players for at least two weeks—and longer if Spain reach the knockout rounds. The coach, who has successfully given Castilla identity and character, will now need to rely on his depth and tactical creativity.

Fran González’s inclusion is especially notable, as he had been playing with the U-21s, and his call-up reflects his rapid progress. Fortea and Aguado bring defensive solidity, Pitarch offers midfield balance, and Cristian David completes the Madrid contingent. Their presence underscores why Real Madrid’s academy is widely regarded as one of the best in Europe.

At Valdebebas, there is both pride and concern. On the one hand, the club celebrates seeing so many players represent Spain. On the other, the timing is difficult, especially with five starters missing during a busy schedule. Fortea’s case is particularly striking, as his absence coincides with a moment when he might have debuted with the Real Madrid first team in the Champions League, following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury and Dani Carvajal’s red card against Marseille.
