Antonio Rüdiger has decided to retire from international football and bring his Germany career to an end. The Real Madrid defender believes the time has come to close a chapter that has been an important part of his career and focus entirely on his club.
The idea of stepping away from the German national team began to take shape after the last World Cup. Rüdiger chose not to make a rushed decision, instead taking time to assess his situation before reaching a final conclusion.
After more than a decade representing Germany and establishing himself as one of the team's key players, the 33-year-old believes now is the right moment to step aside. Rüdiger leaves the Mannschaft with the 2017 Confederations Cup among his honours.
His decision will allow Rüdiger to focus fully on Real Madrid. At 33, the defender wants to manage his physical condition carefully and extend his career at the highest level while reducing the demands of balancing club and international football.
Rüdiger will now dedicate all his efforts to Real Madrid, where he remains determined to play an important role under José Mourinho.
