Alvaro Carreras is inching closer to a return to Real Madrid, but the 22-year-old left-back has expressed frustration over the timing of the transfer, which has yet to be finalized.
According to A BOLA, Carreras had hoped to complete the move before the tournament began. Instead, after just nine days of vacation, he was instructed to return to Seixal and join Benfica’s preparations for the Club World Cup in the United States, a setback that left him visibly disheartened.
Although the Spanish defender has already agreed to personal terms with Real Madrid, negotiations between the clubs remain incomplete. Benfica are holding firm on the €50 million release clause, while Real Madrid are offering €45 million, hoping to bridge the gap through additional clauses or adjustments to agent-related fees.
Carreras, who came through Real Madrid’s academy before joining Manchester United, has long aspired to return to the Santiago Bernabéu. However, the ongoing uncertainty seems to be affecting his performance. His showing in Benfica’s opening match against Boca Juniors was inconsistent and drew criticism from Spanish media covering the event in Miami. In the next game, against Auckland City, Carreras picked up a second yellow card of the tournament for kicking the ball toward the referee in stoppage time.
He is suspended for Benfica’s final group-stage clash against Bayern and was substituted at halftime in the Auckland match. As a result, the young defender may have already played his final minutes for the Portuguese side, particularly if the team fails to progress beyond the group stage.
Despite the delays, confidence remains high that a deal will be completed in the coming days. For now, Carreras, eager and visibly disappointed, waits for his long-awaited return to Real Madrid to become a reality.
