Madrid mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida has defended the proposed urban planning modification affecting Real Madrid's Sports City in Valdebebas, rejecting criticism over the potential increase in the value of the land.

Almeida argued that the operation will benefit the city by creating new green areas, municipal spaces and opportunities for economic activity.

The mayor stressed that the proposal is not new, recalling that the City Council announced almost a year ago, alongside Community of Madrid president Isabel Díaz Ayuso, its intention to promote the planning modification together with Real Madrid.

According to Almeida, it should not be "surprising" that the value of the land could increase following the change, given that the area's current urban planning framework dates back more than two decades and no longer reflects the city's present needs.

He also rejected the idea that the operation should be assessed solely based on the potential financial benefit for Real Madrid.

"This is not a question of what Real Madrid earns", Almeida said, emphasizing that the focus should instead be on "what the city earns".

In particular, he highlighted that the modification would make land available for new municipal uses and green areas that do not currently exist on the site, providing additional spaces for residents of Valdebebas to enjoy.
