Vinícius Júnior once again rose to the occasion as the Champions League knockout stages began, delivering a decisive performance for Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium.
The Brazilian forward was a constant nightmare for Manchester City, directly contributing to both of Madrid’s goals. His impact could have been even greater, having missed a one-on-one chance, another clear opportunity, and even seeing a goal ruled out.
“It was a very important match for our confidence,” Vinícius said after the game. “Since the beginning of the season we've had some good games, but we haven't controlled the match like in this tie. It was very difficult against a great team with a great coach. They had a lot of possession, but we knew we had to work hard and take our chances, even though I missed many.”
With 16 goals in Champions League knockout matches, Vinícius now stands behind only Cristiano Ronaldo (50) and Karim Benzema (33) in the club’s history, further cementing his reputation as a big-game player.
“Yes, it’s an important moment. We all know the big matches are coming, and when Real Madrid plays in this competition, everything changes. We’re ready for more, for whatever comes,” he added.
During his celebration, Vinícius also referenced last season’s tensions at the Etihad: “There’s always another chance, and here it is. We’ve won and we’re through to the quarterfinals, thanks to the fans and our coaching staff. Football is a long season, and last year they provoked me, so I celebrated the way I felt was right.”
Looking ahead, he sent a clear message toward a potential clash with Bayern Munich: “Let’s get them.”
