September 15, 1943, marked the beginning of one of the most successful eras in Real Madrid’s history, as Santiago Bernabéu was elected president of the club at the age of 48.
Bernabéu succeeded Antonio Santos Peralba and went on to lead Real Madrid for 35 years, overseeing an extraordinary period of institutional and sporting growth that transformed the club into a global powerhouse.
During his presidency, from 1943 to 1978, Real Madrid won six European Cups, 16 LaLiga titles, one Intercontinental Cup, six Spanish Cups, two Latin Cups and two Small World Cups. Bernabéu was also one of the driving forces behind the creation of the European Cup.
One of his most significant projects was the construction of the Nuevo Chamartín, which opened in 1947 and was later renamed the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in his honour.
The basketball section also enjoyed remarkable success during his presidency, winning six European Cups, three Intercontinental Cups, 19 league titles, 18 Spanish Cups and one Latin Cup.
Bernabéu’s 35-year tenure left an enduring legacy at Real Madrid, laying the foundations for the club’s dominance both on and off the pitch.
