Today marks the 78th anniversary of the Santiago Bernabéu’s inauguration, a stadium that has become one of the most iconic landmarks in world sport. On December 14, 1947, Real Madrid opened its legendary home with a friendly match against Portuguese side Os Belenenses, securing a 3-1 victory. Barinaga had the honor of scoring the first goal ever at the stadium.
Since that historic day, the Bernabéu has been the setting for Real Madrid’s greatest triumphs. Countless unforgettable nights have unfolded in front of its supporters, especially in recent Champions League knockout rounds against teams such as PSG, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich, on the road to the club’s Fourteenth and Fifteenth European titles.
Named after Santiago Bernabéu in 1955 in tribute to the club’s legendary president, the stadium has continued to evolve. With the renovation now practically complete, the Bernabéu offers maximum comfort, enhanced security, and cutting-edge technology, redefining the matchday experience for fans.
Beyond football, the stadium has expanded its global profile by hosting major international events. Among them was the first official NFL game ever played in Spain, featuring the Miami Dolphins and the Washington Commanders last November. Over the years, the Bernabéu has also staged four European Cup finals, the 1982 World Cup final, the 1964 European Championship final, and the 2018 Copa Libertadores final.
Today, the Bernabéu stands as a symbol of global sport and one of Madrid’s top tourist attractions. Fans from around the world can enjoy the Bernabéu Tour, explore the club’s rich history, admire its trophies, and visit the 2,800-square-meter megastore, recently recognized at TheStadiumBusiness Awards 2025.
